<abstract>
Thanks to the pioneering fieldwork of Robert Braidwood, the central Zagros acquired a prominent position in research on the process of Neolithization. Although Braidwood published only brief accounts of his project, his work laid the foundation for subsequent investigations throughout the region. Nevertheless, over the past few decades, the central Zagros has not retained enough scholarly attention in western Asia. Current evidence suggests that, following climatic amelioration and environmental improvement at the onset of the Holocene, local communities began to take initial steps toward Neolithic lifeways. Human occupation became increasingly concentrated within ecological niches, where access to diverse animal and plant resources was abundant. This process facilitated the accumulation of an unprecedented degree of ecological knowledge from the 10th millennium BC onward. During the 9th millennium BC, the region experienced a series of important transformations. A gradual shift toward more sedentary forms of life occurred, accompanied by initial attempts at plant cultivation and animal husbandry. However, the underlying causes of these fundamental developments remain poorly understood at the regional scale. In this context, the evidence from Chogha Golan occupies a particularly significant position. Previous investigations at the site revealed a long and continuous sequence of intensive occupation, representing sustained experimentation with plant exploitation, including early steps toward cultivation and farming during the 10th–8th millennia BC. The recent excavations have further demonstrated comparable experimentation in the development of early domestic architecture, while also yielding new assemblages of lithics, ground stone tools, and objects made of clay, bone, and stone, as well as faunal and botanical remains. Although excavation and analysis of the recovered materials are still ongoing, these data have the potential to provide important new insights into human resilience and adaptation in subsistence practices, technology, settlement organization, and ecological interactions during the Neolithic transition in the central Zagros.
</abstract>
